Alberta Approves Private iGaming Framework: A New Canadian Market Opens

The Canadian province of Alberta has approved a regulatory framework allowing private iGaming operators to enter the market, expected to launch later in 2026.

Alberta has become the second Canadian province to approve a framework for private iGaming operators, with market launch expected in the second half of 2026. The move follows Ontario, which opened to private operators in April 2022 and has since grown into one of North America's most closely watched regulated markets.

The Alberta framework

Alberta's Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco (AGFT) Commission is overseeing the regulatory buildout. The framework is expected to follow a similar structure to Ontario's iGaming model, with an approved site registry, licensed operator requirements, and a regulatory oversight body.

Why Alberta matters

Alberta has a population of approximately 4.5 million and one of Canada's highest per-capita incomes, making it an attractive market for operators. The province has historically had high rates of gambling participation, with players already accessing Ontario-licensed and offshore platforms.

Lessons from Ontario

Ontario's market, now in its fourth year, has provided a template for provincial iGaming regulation in Canada. The market opened with significant operator participation and has matured steadily, though operators have noted that iGaming Ontario's (iGO) compliance requirements are among the most demanding in North America.

For operators planning Alberta entry, early engagement with the regulatory process, including compliance preparation, responsible gaming frameworks, and technical certification, will be critical to securing a position among the first wave of licences.

The broader Canadian picture

Canada operates on a province-by-province model for iGaming regulation. Beyond Ontario and Alberta, other provinces including British Columbia and Quebec operate government-run platforms. The gradual opening of provincial markets to private operators is expected to continue through the latter half of the decade, making Canada one of the most strategically significant markets for regulated iGaming growth in North America.
